Our apartment has a fireplace with a chimney and everything.?

Im not sure how to tell if we can use fire logs inside of it. there is copper piping coming in from the back where someone had propane fire logs in it but at the end someone cut up the copper and wrapped it up so noone could use it.. there are burn marks on the back side of the fire place where it looks a very hot flame was in there. I dont think a propane fire log would make this kind of burn mark. how can I tell if I can use fire logs in this fireplace? it has a lever to open and close the chimney. Thanks in advance to anyone who can tell me how to find out if i can use real fire logs in this.
